And he also finds it difficult to identify with today's fast paced delhi where people can't even pronounce urdu words properly. He tries to adjust with this changed world which is completely different from the delhi he lived in. Will he able to fit himself in this new avatar of delhi? Watch this hilarious play to find out!

Rules of participation (though you can choose to just be a part of the audience):

1. You get 7-8 mins on the mike. A bell will signal when your time is up.
2. Bring new material at every Open Baithak. You can perform the same material twice max, if you wish to try it in a different way.
3. You can bring poems or prose readings in any language.

About: Open Baithak is an extension of the 'Spoken Word' Series organized by the British Council earlier this year. Open Baithak allows poet performers a space to experiment with words, enjoy them, delight in them and do risky and innovative things with them. A space where poet performers coming from different linguistic, literary and oral traditions can find and learn from each other. A space where new poets can try out their verses and voices.

The first five sessions of Open Baithak are being sponsored by the British Council Delhi. Come to participate, or as audience to good poetry and to daring, dazzling performances.

Khayal Darpan: A Mirror of Imagination

Khayal Darpan is a Documentary Film about Classical Music in Pakistan by Yousuf Saeed,105 mins, Hindustani/English. Yousuf will be present for a discussion after the screening.

In 2005, the Delhi-based filmmaker, Yousuf Saeed, spent more than 6 months in Pakistan as part of a research fellowship where he surveyed the development of khayal and other forms of classical traditions in Pakistan after 1947. After traveling in the 3 main cities of Pakistan – Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad - interviewing musicians and scholars, attending musicconcerts, and observing the teaching of music in various institutions,Yousuf not only managed to document some of the surviving practitioners and patrons of art music, but also raised many vital questions about cultural identity, nationalism, legitimacy of music in Islam, Pakistan's popular culture and its affairs with India, and the survival of classical music itself in South Asia. The film features some well-known as well as many lesser known but talented musicians of Pakistan, breaking many stereotypes about the country.

Bant Singh, a Dalit singer and an agrarian worker, who continues to be defiant even after the amputation of three limbs, is currently being treated in St. Stephen’s Hospital, Delhi. The doctors are hopeful that with artificial limbs, Bant Singh will be able to walk again. This is one of my favourite music festivals because of the venue - to lie on the grass, look at the stars against the shadow of the Qutub Minar, and to hear the rising strains of somebody's voice, a tabla, a sitar, a guitar... to wander off for some hot chaat or halwa or chai, and have the music call you back to its feet. The festival organisers also claim that it is dedicated to the youth of Delhi, which is why there is always one popular fusion band each evening, to go with the classical performance.

Skinny Alley is one of India’s biggest rock bands comprising some of the most experienced and versatile musicians in the country. MARGINS: Yeh sab tadan ke adhikari

Gender, class, religion and caste, the mainstreaming Indian state has evolved in a manner that many are excluded, they lie on the margins. MARGINS is the coming together of three short scripts linked in their critique of the mainstream of our state and society from diverse peripheral “women” perspectives.

The first plot borrows a real life story from the files of a women’s organisation Shaktishalini. The story is based in Delhi, centring round a lower middle class case of a muslim family. The script examines state constructions of justice for muslims, women and muslim women.

The second leaning on archetypal Dalit autobiographies reconstructs another real story though from a different perspective. It juxtaposes caste and gender. Hidden within a sceptical anti-brahminical cover is the question whether gender transcends caste? Is it possible for a Dalit man to exploit an upper caste woman? Who is in the margins?

The third, set in the lower class, is a rollicking farce. Slicing hegemonic patriarchal structures from diverse marginal perspectives, the script juxtaposes constructions of masculinity with the spirit of football.

Sourced from workshop experiences and conversations with and readings from those involved, the plays have been scripted by Sanjay Kumar, Anuradha Marwah and Anand Prakash respectively.

Andha Yug is one of the most significant plays of modern India. Written immediately after the partition of the Indian subcontinent, the play is a profound meditation on the politics of violence and aggressive selfhood.

The moral burden of the play is that every act of violence inevitably debases society as a whole.

It captures the essential tension between the nightmare of self-enchantment, which the story of the Kauravas represents, and the ever-present possibility of finding a way out of the cycle of revenge into a redemptive ethicality.

We aim to do this by holding an annual worldwide demonstration across the globe called Walk the World. Once a year hundreds of thousands of people in every time zone will take to the streets to call for an end to the needless suffering of hungry children.

Through this global day of action, Walk the World will raise awareness about the 300 million hungry children in this world. Our call will urge policy-makers and governments – whether in rich or poor countries – to focus more funds and resources on feeding children. These people have the power to improve the lives of children all around the globe.

Walk the World also aims to raise funds to finance projects that assist hungry children. Whether from local companies or generous individuals, we know that every contribution helps to ease the suffering of those in need.

Our efforts are linked closely to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). If we end child hunger by 2015, we will have effectively achieved the first MDG – that of halving the number of all hungry people by 2015.

The Sea of Eloquence – An Evening of Dastan-e-Amir Hamza

The oral narration of Dastan-e-Amir Hamza was a popular past time in most parts of Central, Western and South Asia and North Africa since medieval times. Originally composed in Persian, the Dastan-e-Amir Hamza describes the battles of Amir Hamza, the Prophet Muhammad’s Uncle, against infidels, sorcerers and other pretenders to divinity.

Until the beginning of the twentieth century, the Dastan-e-Amir Hamza was singularly successful in entertaining a whole range of people, from the commoners at chauks and nukkads to the elites in their palaces; it was performed at the steps of the Jama Masjid where Dastangos gathered. While their neglect as literature is inexcusable, they have been wholly obliterated from the canon of performing arts. As anecdotes of Mir Baqar Ali, the last known Dastango of Delhi, testify, their performances required an exceptional command over rhetoric, delivery, mimicry, ventriloquism and spontaneous composition.

The present performance of Dastangoi builds upon some recent shows that were enthusiastically received in the Capital. The performance consisted of portions of the best-known daftar, or chapter, of the 46 volume Dastan-e-Amir Hamza, the Tilism Hoshruba, the ‘Enchantment that Steals away the Senses’, which is itself in seven volumes.

The performances have come about as a result of a collaboration between S.R. Faruqi, the foremost living authority on these Dastans and the only person to possess a full set of all the 46 volumes, and the performers. Faced with neglect and systematic devaluation we now have very scanty evidence for the way in which these Dastans were compiled and performed. Even basic things such as movements, gesticulation, stage setting are wholly unknown. The current performance is therefore merely an exploration of an Art form which, astonishingly in a culture where poetry was regarded as the supreme art, was considered by some to be of a higher order than poetry itself. Dastangos were supposed to be a repository not just of language, common speech as well as literary, but also of social mores, craftsmanship, and all other forms of knowledge.

The Dastangos of old performed in an oral culture where memory, sound and directness were much prized. As modern actors we neither have skills to memorize whole daftars, nor the inventiveness to do spontaneous and extempore improvisations which are the hallmark of oral performances.

Mahmood Farooqui is a self-trained actor and performer whose most recent foray into acting consisted of a role in Mahesh Dattani’s English film, Mango Soufflé. Initiated into theatre as a schoolboy, and as stage manager, by Mohan Maharishi, former director of the National School of Drama, he directed several plays at school and college, and prepared for the final entrance workshop of the NSD, before founding his own amateur theatre group called Dastak Theatre. After completing his M Phil in Indian History, Mahmood went to Mumbai and performed in IPTA’s Aakhri Shama and the Company Theatre’s Hindustani presentation of Rosencratz and Guildenstern are Dead. Earlier this year, he was given a Fellowship by Sarai, CSDS to work on the Dastan-e-Amir Hamza.

Danish Husain has done theatre with the best names in the country - Habib Tanvir, M.S. Sathyu, Barry John, Rajinder Nath, Sabina Mehta Jaitley, Aziz Quraishi, et al in a wide variety of roles. His latest assignments include a play called Raja by Rabindra Nath Tagore and a movie, Losing Gemma, by Granada Productions for a British TV Channel called ITV. He’ll also be performing at Bonn Theatre Festival in May 2006 as part of Habib Tanvir’s Agra Bazaar troupe. Besides being an accomplished actor Danish is a poet and a writer, whose work has been published across a cross-section of media, including Tehelka and other journals. He is a member of few collaborative blogs and a writer's group called Wriyaz supported by the British Council. Danish holds a Master's degree in economics from the Delhi School of Economics and an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi.

Every day cities of India are churning out mountains of plastic and nonbio-degradable waste. And yet, ours has been a culture of not wastinganything, of reusing every scrap. In small towns and villages, as wellas with experimenters around the country, this is still the norm.

In this swapathgami meeting, we hope to explore:

What kinds of creativeand useful things are we making (or can we make) out of waste?

How can we connect 'recycling' and 'upcycling' with art, architecture, music,farming, festivals, etc.?

How do we expand understandings around 'Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Regenerate'?

How can we make a healthylivelihood from waste?

How do we nurture 'zero waste zones' in ourfamilies and communities?

Jonas Hellborg is a brilliant Swedish bassist who has played with the likes of John McLaughlin, Shawn Lane, Buckethead, Michael Shrieve, Kofi Baker among others.

Mattias IA Eklundh is Europe's answer to Steve Vai and in my humble opinion, the most innovative guitarist around. He currently fronts the band Freak Kitchen and has also released 2 absolutely crazy, guitar-centric solo albums. He's also guested on a number of Soilwork albums. The drummer is Zoltan Csorz (hungarian) who Jonas is pretty crazy about right now! Paco Sery and an ex-zappa drummer were also being considered by Jonas for this tour, finally its Zoltan.
